Phoenix Mercury forward Brianna Turner became the fifth player in Mercury history to win the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for the month of June on Friday.
Turner joins Briann January, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Temeka Johnson as the only players in franchise history to receive the honor.
The award recognizes players who reflect the passion of the WNBA and help community advancement.
“Breezy has always been this person and this year, in addition to those causes, she has helped keep Brittney Griner top-of-mind, speaking at her rally and distributing shoes to unhoused persons in BG’s honor. We are so proud to have someone like Breezy representing our organization and so gratified to see her receive this recognition that she absolutely deserves,” Mercury president Vince Kozar said in a release.
Turner was recognized for her work with several organizations and for advocating the safe return of Griner from incarceration in Russia.
She was also praised for her work with Equality Texas, Moms Demand Action and BG’s Heart & Sole Shoe Drive in conjunction with the Phoenix Rescue Mission.
Turner helped distribute shoes, water and hygiene kits to homeless people in Phoenix on three separate occasions this summer.
She also spoke during the Bring BG Home Rally to raise awareness for Griner’s situation.
Equality Texas, a group aimed to support LGBTQ+ rights, will receive a $5,000 donation as Turner’s nonprofit of choice.
