An early look at the Phoenix Suns NBA Cup group

The stage is set, so who are the Suns’ opponents?

The NBA Cup has been the latest addition that Adam Silver has introduced to try to make the regular season more entertaining. This has led to mixed reactions from fans over the two seasons it has been here, but the league is sticking with it. The latest groups have been revealed for the next season, in which the Phoenix Suns are in a fairly stacked group.

What Group are the Suns in?

The Phoenix Suns are in Group A, which also includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Utah Jazz. This group is going to be quite challenging, as it consists of both teams that were in last year’s Western Conference Final. Alongside that, the Suns face two teams against which they should be able to hold their own: the Kings and Jazz.

The Suns last year were in the same group, as were two of these teams, the Thunder and Jazz. They lost to the Thunder but ultimately beat the Jazz, a scenario that I could also envision happening here.

Early Predictions

My early prediction for the Suns’ record in this group is 2-2. I think they will be able to beat the Kings and Jazz, but will struggle with the Timberwolves and Thunder, as we have seen in the past. With Jordan Ott now at the helm, though, anything can happen, and I would not be shocked if they were better in this tournament than many expect. We have seen teams win the NBA Cup but ultimately fail in the postseason. Could that be the Suns?
