Time to start tracking the Vegas boys.
The Summer Suns will likely have an experienced sharpshooting guard, whether second-round pick Koby Brea is on the floor or not, as Mitch Mascari, formerly of Drake, will suit up for the squad in Las Vegas.
DraftExpress’ Jon Chepkevich had the news.
Mascari played his final year of college basketball at Drake and helped the Bulldogs make a run to the NCAA Tournament, where they upset Missouri in the 6-11 game.
Mascari took 216 3s to just 38 2s over his season, and he was much more efficient from behind the arc (40.3%) than inside it (31.6%). He’s a very decisive shooter who can load and fire in a hurry.
He was part of such an effective offense that his head coach, Ben McCollum, got the jump from Drake to the Iowa job, bringing leading scorer Bennett Stirtz with him via the transfer portal.
He added 1.5 steals per game, and had at least four in four contests, including the upset win over Missouri.
He had previously redshirted and played four seasons at Division 2 Northwest Missouri State, where he made 165 of 378 3-pointers over 125 games (43.7% on three attempts per game).
With one two-way slot already filled by Appalachian State forward CJ Huntley, per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, it’s yet to be seen whether Phoenix will enter the Las Vegas Summer League with all three slots filled.
If not, Mascari will likely be eyeing that opportunity when he gets the chance to suit up. The Suns’ draft haul so far — center Khaman Maluach and forward Rasheer Fleming preceding Brea and Huntley — suggests ample room for guard production, at least in Vegas.
