Sing no sad songs.
Your Northern Arizona Suns, who in spells have been a better on-court product than its parent club across the last five years, are no more.
Phoenix’s G-League affiliate declined an invitation to the Disney World bubble. The entirety of the regular season will be played at the Florida location and 18 of the league’s 28 squads will participate.
In July of 2020, the Suns struck a deal with the Detroit Pistons that will send the NAZ franchise to Michigan at the conclusion of the season. James Jones didn’t see the team as part of the big club’s future.
“Ownership and management of the Northern Arizona Suns does not align with the Phoenix Suns’ strategic plan for player development over the next three-to-five years.”
So no Disney means no season, means goodbye Prescott and hello Detroit. The team formally known as the Suns will now be referred to as the Motor City Cruise. The Pistons’ current G-League team, the Grand Rapids Drive, is currently looking at a future without a home.
All told, 18 of the G-League’s 28 teams will participate in Florida. Two-way players will have the opportunity to participate with other squads. That includes Phoenix rookie guard Ty-Shon Alexander, signed following last year’s draft.
If Phoenix goes without a G-League representative next season, they’ll join Denver and Portland as the only franchises without a minor league affiliate.
