NBA: Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns
Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

The Suns broke a lot of records tonight.

Houston, you have a problem. That problem was the scorching hot Suns who could not miss from deep, as they put together an offensive clinic in a 126-120 win.

  • New NBA record with 12 threes in a quarter (2nd quarter)
  • Ties NBA record with 18 threes in a half (1st half)
  • New Suns record with 25 threes in a game
  • Jae Crowder new career high on threes (8) made all of them in the first half

Phoenix now sits just 1.5 games back from the number 1 seed out West after the Jazz dropped a game to the lowly Wizards.

1st Half

The Suns started the game a bit sluggish, allowing Houston to get comfortable and struggled to find a rhythm in the first six minutes. Phoenix called a timeout down by two 17-15 with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter.

Jae Crowder started off on fire from deep, connecting on 3 of his first 4 three-point attempts.

Deandre Ayton got off to an active start as well, posting 8 points and 4 rebounds (3 offensive) along with a steal in his first 9 minutes of action.

The Suns led after 12 minutes of play by the score of 38-to-29, thanks to strong finish to the quarter from the bench mob.

Jevon Carter put on a show in the 2nd quarter, tallying 3 three-pointers in his first seven minutes of action.

Crowder picked up where he left off in the first quarter when he check back in, hitting his first 2 three-point attempts in the 2nd quarter.

The Suns were 15-for-21 (71%) from deep with 3:20 left in the half, just flat out shooting the lights out early.

It was an offensive clinic as the Suns were scorching hot and clicking on all cylinders as they made an NBA record 18 threes in the first half!

Jae Crowder’s stat-line in the 1st half was ridiculous:

26 points, 8/9 3PFG, 2 rebounds in 14 minutes.

Jae Crowder’s career-high in three-pointers made before tonight was 6.

He is already 8-for-9 in just 14 minutes with 26 points at half-time.

At half-time the Suns were leading 81-to-58, doing to Houston what teams used to do to them in their down years.

2nd Half

The start to the third quarter was far from inspiring, as they were forced to call an early timeout after getting outscored 14-to-7 in the first 4 plus minutes.

Houston showed some fight, but the Suns hot shooting continued. Their ball movement and execution on offense was a sight to behold as well, as they had 24 assists as a team with 2:14 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Devin Booker had 12 points in the third quarter, pushing his total to 20.

Phoenix led by the score of 103-to-88 heading into the 4th and final quarter.

Early in the 4th quarter they broke the franchise record for most threes made in a game with 25.

NEW FRANCHISE RECORD!

25 3’s!

Unfortunately, their defense didn’t rise to the occasion and allowed Houston to keep chipping away at the lead, eventually cutting it down to 9 points leading to a Suns timeout.

Meanwhile, the Rockets have cut the Suns’ lead down to 9 points. Still 7:41 to go. Timeout Phoenix

Houston’s young core really pushed the envelope, getting as close as 5 points, but the Suns turned it up a notch and closed the game out like good teams do. Unfortunately, they couldn’t rest their starters with Miami coming to town tomorrow for their 2nd of a back-to-back.
