Since taking over as the General Manager of the Phoenix Suns in May, Brian Gregory has been wheeling and dealing, making changes to the roster and the coaching staff.
While it was expected that a lot of turnover would transpire this offseason no matter who was in charge, from his introductory press conference, Gregory has harped on the idea of the franchise having strong “alignment,” all the way from the players to owner Mat Ishbia. He’s emphasized the importance of “alignment” so much it’s already become a joke in the media.

While he’s been GM for such a short time, Gregory’s form of alignment appears to be keeping a strong relationship with players, building a younger team, and fortifying the defensive end for the Valley.
Since he took over, it has been reported ad nauseam that the franchise is building around Devin Booker, with him reportedly having a strong say in the Valley hiring new coach Jordan Ott, and the team set to extend him for two years, $150 million in the near future.
With the team limited on assets, the moves the Suns made to move up in the draft to acquire Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea have the team’s newest members feeling wanted.

“For them to see a want and need in me, to me, that means a lot, and so for me, it’s super important to prove them right, to make sure that they know they made the right decision.”

When the team traded away Kevin Durant last month, they did so for 23-year-old Jalen Green, the 10th pick in the NBA Draft that turned into 18-year-old Khaman Maluach, and Dillon Brooks, a defensive-minded player known for his physicality and toughness.
Additionally, the Suns traded for Mark Williams during the draft and signed Nigel Hayes-Davis on the first night of free agency.
While the team re-signed point guard Collin Gillespie to a standard contract, the roster still lacks point guard depth with Tyus Jones leaving to play for the Orlando Magic. The squad is slim scoring and size on the wings with Durant gone, and Bradley Beal and the organization appear to be at an impasse in regards to his future with the team. Phoenix remains about $13 million above the second apron.

With the Durant trade not officially finalized until July 6th, more moves may be coming for the Suns once Green and Brooks’ contracts are on the Valley’s books. Potentially, Bradley Beal is moved in the near future, and maybe the Suns make a surprise signing or release in the next couple days, but as of right now, what would you grade Brian Gregory’s tenure as GM?
