The Arizona Cardinals have not had a player wear No. 99 since 1950. It was later retired to honor Marshall Goldberg, who played for the Chicago Cardinals from 1939-1948 and was instrumental in their one championship in 1947.
The number is coming out of retirement for now, though. The team announced new defensive end J.J. Watt will wear No. 99, which is the number he has worn his entire 10-year NFL career with the Houston Texans and then previously when he played collegiately at Wisconsin.

Goldberg died in 2006 so he was unable to lend it to him or to give Watt his blessing to wear it, but Goldberg’s daughter said it would be fine and that her father would even “have been delighted” to allow it.
So there will be no new number for Watt, who has agreed to a reported two-year, $31 million deal with Arizona.
It will not be odd to see him in the number but it will be new to see a Cardinals uniform with it.
