Cardinals enter offseason with little cap space

January 14, 2021 by Cards Wire Leave a Comment

The Arizona Cardinals have a number of needs and a number of questions for the offseason. They will have to address them without much salary cap space.

The salary cap is expected to go down. There will be a floor of $175 million, although if the league gets new television money from an expected 17th game in the regular season, that could increase.

According to Over the Cap as of Thursday morning, the Cardinals currently have about $24.8 million in salary cap space. However, because they only have 32 players from last season under contract, that number is deceiving. Their effective cap space is only about $12.9 million.

That means, without moves to increase that number by cutting and trading players or restructuring or renegotiating deals, they will have about $13 million to spend in free agency.

For a team that wants to upgrade at a number of positions, that isn’t much money to work with.

This will make for an intriguing offseason as we await the beginning of the new league year in March.
