Cardinals have more than $14 million in cap space heading into free agency

March 10, 2021 by Cards Wire Leave a Comment

The NFL has set the salary cap for the 2021 season at $182.5 million. That is a decrease of nearly $16 million over last season but it is higher than some projections. Most teams were operating and planning under the assumption of a $180 million cap so this gives teams a little more flexibility.

Where do the Arizona Cardinals stand with cap space one week before free agency?

They have an estimated $14.6 million in cap space, according to Over the Cap at the time of publishing.

That isn’t a ton of space but the have not yet made any moves to increase space. They will certainly make player cuts (perhaps cornerback Robert Alford or linebacker Devon Kennard). They could rework contracts (a potential extension for linebacker Chandler Jones) and could make trades.

While it does not seem like a lot of cap space, they are in a decent spot. They already added defensive lineman J.J. Watt last week. They are ranked 17th in the league in cap space. However, 10 teams are still over the cap and no team below them in cap space rankings has more than $6 million in cap space.

The Cardinals believe they will not be limited really in any way with when they want to accomplish this offseason. With free agency beginning next week, we will see if that is actually the case.
