Cardinals opened $6.7 million in cap space with D.J. Humphries extension

August 4, 2022 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

Offensive tackle D.J. Humphries’ extension agreed to on Tuesday will net the Arizona Cardinals $6.7 million in extra cap space for the 2022 season that he was already under contract for, reports ESPN’s Field Yates.

Humphries received a $17 million bonus with his three-year extension that runs through 2025. He will make $21 million this season but see his cap hit dip to $12.6 million.

The left tackle’s contract before the extension was set to pay him $15 million in yearly cash with a $19.3 million cap hit, according to Spotrac.

The 28-year-old’s three-year extension is worth a total of $66.8 million, with $34 million guaranteed and $21 million going into the tackle’s pocket in Year 1, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Arizona selected Humphries 24th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida, with the tackle now entering his eighth year in the Valley. He made his first Pro Bowl last season.

After the five years of his rookie contract expired, Humphries re-signed with the Cardinals in February 2020 on a three-year deal worth $43.7 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

The left tackle has started every game he has played with the Cardinals (75), but his NFL debut took a year after Humphries was the only first-round pick in 2015 to be inactive for the entire season.
