Cardinals QB Kyler Murray out of training camp due to COVID-19

August 1, 2022 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has contracted COVID-19 and was not at Monday’s training camp practice, head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters.

Murray is expected to miss at least five days of camp.

Kingsbury added that Murray has minor symptoms.

The quarterback’s absence means more reps for backup Colt McCoy, as well as depth options Trace McSorley and Jarrett Guarantano.

McCoy enters his second year with Arizona and performed well in Murray’s place last season. He made eight appearances and threw for 740 yards while completing 75% of his passes for three touchdowns and one pick.

The Cardinals went 2-1 with McCoy starting for Murray.

McSorley signed with Arizona off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad in November last year. He has three games of experience since entering the NFL as a sixth-round pick in 2019.

Guarantano is a rookie out of Washington State.

Murray, 24, enters his fourth NFL season with a contract extension signed after a dramatic offseason and negotiating, social media scrubbing and the details of that contract causing controversy before a study clause was removed from the already-inked deal last week.

The No. 1 pick from the 2019 NFL Draft and two-time Pro Bowler completed 69% of his passes for 3,787 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season while rushing for 423 more yards and five scores.
