Cardinals Sign UFA G Royce Newman

Packers’ 4th round pick in 2021 spent a year as a backup with the Bucs in 2023

The Cardinals announced today that they have completed their one-year deal with UFA CB Jaylon Jones (CHI) and they have also signed UFA G Royce Newman (TB via GB) to a one-year contact.

Newman (6-5, 311, 27, Ole Miss) was the Packers’ 4th round pick in 2021. He spent 3 seasons in Green Bay garnering 24 starts. Last season he played only 3 snaps and a backup guard for the Bucs.

His PFF grades have been consistently in the 50s, pretty much across the board. The bilk of his starts in Green Bay came in his rookie seasons when the Packers’ line was decimated by injuries.

• 2021 (GB) —- 1,081 snaps at RG, gave up 6 sacks, 36 QB pressures and committed 5 penalties as a rookie. PFF grade of 55.7.
• 2022 (GB) —- 451 snaps at RG and RT gave up 4 sacks, 18 QB pressures and committed 3 penalties for a PFF grade of 57.5.
• 2023 (GB) —- 183 snaps at LG (181) and TE (2) gave up 1 sack, 10 QB pressures and committed 1 penalty, but a low run blocking grade led to a PFF grade of 40.5
• 2024 (TB) —-3 snaps at RT give up 0 sacks, 0 QB pressures and committed 0 penalties for a PFF grade of 60.0.

Versatility: has experience at RG, LG, RT and blocking TE which gives him a chance to stick as a swing G/T.

Question mark: His starts and snaps have diminished every season the past 4 years.

Coincidentally, CB Jaylon Jones and Royce Newman were college teammates at Ole Miss.
