The Arizona Cardinals opened the 21-day practice window Wednesday for tackle Jonah Williams, who has been on injured reserve since suffering a right knee injury on the final play of the first quarter of the Week 1 game in Buffalo.
Kelvin Beachum has replaced Williams at right tackle since the injury. Beachum, who has been playing for the last month with a hamstring issue, had his usual Wednesday day off.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon said before practice his sense after Williams signed as an unrestricted free agent in March was that he would be “a big-time player for us.”
Asked about his strengths, Gannon said, “Very technique sound. He’s strong. He’s smart. Plays with really good pad level. He didn’t play much, but he played well in the snaps that he played. We’ll take it day-by-day with him.”
Gannon also used a similar “one-day-at-a-time” description for defensive lineman Darius Robinson when asked how realistic it was for Robinson to be on the field soon after doing hardly anything football-related since injuring his calf on Aug. 22.
That one-day-at-a-time Wednesday did not have Robinson on the field in the portion of practice open to the media.
Gannon said he expected defensive linemen Roy Lopez (ankle) and Naquan Jones (thigh) to be “limited as the week goes on,” but added, “they’re both doing well.”
He also put cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting (neck) “in that same boat.” Those three players were on the field Wednesday morning, as were two new practice squad additions, defensive lineman Anthony Goodlow and outside linebacker Milo Eifler, both of whom had tryouts Tuesday.
