Johnathan Joseph, one of J.J. Watt’s former teammates in Houston, may have played a critical role in Watt’s free agency decision.
The former Texans defensive end stunned the NFL world on Monday when he announced he was signing with the Arizona Cardinals. What made it so shocking was the fact the Cardinals weren’t mentioned by major NFL analysts during Watt’s free agency process.
So what went into Watt’s decision to head to the NFC West to play for Arizona? Joseph, his former teammate, may have had a major influence on the decision.
Joseph, who left Houston to play for the Cardinals in 2020, had a lengthy talk with Watt about what it’s like playing for the Cardinals. He had nothing but praise for the organization and coaching staff.
“Obviously I spent time in Arizona, so you know me and him had a long conversation about that. . . . I kinda had an idea all along where he was probably going to end up going,” Joseph said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via Pro Football Talk. “Just from the conversation that me and him had and just knowing the situation they have there with a young team on offense that has playmakers. Defense, the same thing. Throughout his career, he’s never been able to play with someone as dominant as him on the other side so you put him with Chandler Jones.”
It certainly sounds like J.J. Watt had interest in playing for the Cardinals from the beginning.
Watt will now pair up with Chandler Jones in what’s shaping up to be one of the best defensive line duos in the NFL.
The Cardinals should be in the hunt to win the NFC West with Watt now in the mix.
