Kliff Kingsbury hopes Kyler Murray gets Josh Allen-like contract

August 9, 2021 by Cards Wire

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, coming off a huge year in his third NFL season, has a huge, brand new contact extension that set records.

It isn’t the record-setting deal in terms of total money like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but is a massive deal.

His contract extension is six years and $258 million. He gets a record $150 million in guaranteed money.

This actually is pertinent to the Arizona Cardinals because quarterback Kyler Murray is entering his third season. While he is under contract in 2022 and the Cardinals have a team option in 2023, he is eligible for a contract extension next offseason, which will change the dynamics of the Cardinals’ salary cap situation.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury isn’t worried about having to pay Murray what potentially could be even more money than Allen’s deal. He welcomes it.

“I hope we get the opportunity to do that because that means he’ll have a phenomenal year just like Josh did last year and emerges as one of the top players in the league,” Kingsbury said Saturday. “At that position, you’re willing to do whatever you can to keep that.”

In Allen’s third season, he led the Bills to the AFC Championship Game and a 13-3 regular season. He had 4,544 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes last season while adding eight rushing scores.

Murray almost surpassed 4,000 passing yards in 2020 and would have had he not missed time in the season finale due to an ankle injury. He had 26 touchdown passes and added another 11 rushing scores. He became the first player to ever pass for over 3,500 yards and rush for more than 750.

The Cardinals expect him to take another step forward in his development and gave him help. They added two veterans on the offensive line and signed receiver A.J. Green, which should improve the passing game in 2021.
