NFL Draft Prospect’s Last-Minute Visits Spark Speculation Among Contending Teams

April 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

running back Cam Skattebo

Imagine a diner menu with all the classic staples: pancakes stacked like draft boards, a side of grits as thick as scouting reports, and a milkshake swirling with offseason rumors. Right now, running back Cam Skattebo is the special everyone’s eyeing—a mystery dish with just enough spice to keep NFL front offices hovering by the kitchen. The clock’s ticking toward draft night, and Skattebo’s cross-country tour has turned him into the prospect equivalent of a midnight road trip. Where’s he parking next?

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, running back Cam Skattebo has already met with the Cardinals, Browns, and Giants this week, with two more “Top 30” visits under wraps. Teams are scrambling like linebackers in a two-minute drill, weighing whether the Arizona State star’s bruising style and dual-threat flair can translate to Sundays. He’s a human joystick, but can he handle the NFL’s cheat codes?

Lance Briggs’ Bearish Endorsement of Skattebo

Former Bears linebacker Lance Briggs isn’t playing coy. On the CHGO Bears podcast, he slammed the table for Chicago to draft Skattebo: “If we did draft Cam Skattebo, we’d be getting a hell of a player.” With D’Andre Swift already in the fold, Skattebo could offer the thunder to Swift’s lightning. But will GM Ryan Poles bite?

“Cam Skattebo is a guy who runs really well in between tackles, catches out of the backfield extremely well, he’ll move the chains. To me he’s an every down type of back. Great balance, great vision, I don’t think there’s anything he can’t do,” Briggs added. Cleveland’s interest, meanwhile, feels like a plot twist straight out of Yellowstone.

Nick Chubb’s heroic comeback from a 2023 knee injury hasn’t silenced doubts—his 3.3 yards per carry last year paled next to his career 5.1 average. Enter Skattebo, whose 1,711 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in 2024 scream “Chubb 2.0.” Pro Football Focus analyst Mason Cameron argues, “Cleveland has struggled to find a workhorse back to lean on since Nick Chubb’s devastating knee injury. Skattebo would undoubtedly fill the void.”

The Chubb Factor in Cleveland

Let’s not sugarcoat it: The Browns’ backfield is at a crossroads. Chubb’s resilience is legendary, but Father Time remains undefeated. Skattebo’s 5.8 yards per carry and 45 catches for 605 yards last season suggest he’s more than a consolation prize. His 42-yard touchdown pass in Arizona State’s playoff loss? Icing on the scouting report. But that’s not all.

Skattebo didn’t hide his admiration for Arizona. “I love Arizona. I’m going to end up here at some point in my life,” he admited. Besides, he’s a playmaker, not just a placeholder. But drafting him means admitting the Nick Chubb era’s sunset is near. Meanwhile, off the field, Skattebo’s serving goodwill burgers instead of drama.

His “Skatteburger” fundraiser donated $6,600 to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, proving he’s already mastering the playbook for fan adoration. “It means a lot. This is the first time I’ve been able to give back to something,” he said at the check presentation. “I could save a life one day. That’s something that’s going to be an impact in my life throughout all of my time playing.” Teams craving locker-room leadership might find that as enticing as his highlight reel.

Cardinals’ Homegrown Hopes

Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon didn’t hide his grin when asked about Skattebo’s visit: “Kenny [Dillingham] brings it [film] over to me, and he says, Why don’t you check this guy out?’ I’m not through that part of the evaluation process, but I know he lit it up this year.” Pairing Skattebo with James Conner could give the Cards a backfield duo tougher than a desert heatwave.

As draft night looms, running back Cam Skattebo sits at the center of a classic NFL puzzle—part prospect, part Rorschach test. Is he a relic of bygone bell-cow philosophy or a modern hybrid weapon? In The Natural, Roy Hobbs muses, “We’ve all got two lives: the one we learn with and the one we live after.” Which life awaits Skattebo, and which team will bet on his second act? We’ll have the answer in about 10 days.
