Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson has been on the injured reserve for over a month now and is eligible to return to the field. However, when will we see the exciting second-year rusher? Entering the season as the clear backup to veteran James Conner, the Florida State product had the opportunity to establish himself as the lead back of the future following Conner’s season-ending injury.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, as Benson made just one start before suffering a meniscus injury of his own. While Conner’s injury was season-ending, Trey Benson suffered a meniscus injury and should return at some point in the season. However, the recent update from head coach Jonathan Gannon didn’t provide much insight.

Jonathan Gannon Gives Confusing Update on Potential Trey Benson Return
In a recent interview, Gannon said that the running back is “taking it day by day,” which suggests he will return to the football field before long. However, the team has yet to activate his 21-day practice window, which suggests he still needs time to recover and build up strength before seeing the field.
When Trey Benson eventually returns to the field, he should be the unquestioned RB1 for the remainder of the season. Nobody has stepped up in his absence, as Michael Carter, Bam Knight, and Emari Demercado have all underwhelmed with extended opportunities. Arizona’s offense is far from the most dangerous force in the league, but they have had its moments with veteran Jacoby Brissett under center. Now that Kyler Murray is on the injured reserve, Brissett should remain the starter for the foreseeable future, which should be good news for Benson.
