The Arizona Cardinals will likely address the wide receiver position in free agency. They probably will not target someone with a big contract as they already have DeAndre Hopkins, but adding a veteran to be their No. 2 or No. 3 guy would make sense, especially if Larry Fitzgerald decides to retire.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently projected where 43 soon-to-be free agent receivers will land this offseason. One lands with the Cardinals.
In these projections, they sign Breshad Perriman to a one-year deal worth $3 million.
I liked the move to sign Perriman on a one-year deal after his hot December of 2019 for the Bucs, but the former Ravens first-rounder struggled to stay healthy and didn’t get great quarterback play. The Cardinals desperately need speed in their receiving corps, and Perriman is a way to attack opposing defenses without having to break the bank.
Perriman has the physical tools and would add some top-end speed to the Cardinals offense. However, it would be foolish to expect him to be a star. In five years in the league, his career-high is 36 receptions and he has only played in a full 16 games once in his career.
That said, he also had 645 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. those numbers would have given him the second-most yards on the Cardinals in 2020 and would have tied the team lead for receiving touchdowns.
This past season, playing for the New York Jets, he had 30 catches for 505 yards and three scores. He missed four games.
At a contract like the one Barnwell projects, he is a perfect addition. A trio of Hopkins, Perriman and Christian Kirk would have a dynamic the Cardinals haven’t had in a while.
