5-Star Running Back Out For Year With Academic Issue

September 14, 2021 by The Spun

LSU will not have the services of running back John Emery Jr. for the rest of the 2021 season, head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed today.

Emery, who did not play in LSU’s first two games against UCLA and McNeese State, has been declared academically ineligible, per reports. Orgeron used the term “unavailable” during his Monday media session.

“John Emery is out for the year and my saying is he’s unavailable. Right now, he’s unavailable. Things could change,” Orgeron said, via 247Sports. “If they do change, we’ll play him. Could they change? Yea, but that’s out of my control.”

RB John Emery Jr. is ineligible for the rest of the season, Ed Orgeron confirms.

Expect to see plenty of Tyrion Davis-Price, Corey Kiner and Armoni Goodwin moving forward the next 10 games.

Last season, Emery rushed for 378 yards and three touchdowns on 75 carries. He also added 14 catches for 73 yards.

As a freshman in 2019, Emery carried 39 times for 188 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers’ national championship team. The Destrehan (La.) product was the No. 2 running back and No. 13 overall recruit in the 2019 class, per 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

Through two games this season, Tyrion Davis-Price is LSU’s leading rusher with 68 yards on 21 carries. Corey Kiner has rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown on 11 touches.
