7-Time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge Signs With New NBA Team

September 4, 2021 by The Spun

San Antonio Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge rises up for a jump shot.

Injuries have been an issue for seven-time All-Star center LaMarcus Aldridge for several years now. But none were more serious than the irregular heartbeat diagnosis that led him to retire from the NBA last year.

However, Aldridge has reportedly received medical clearance to play again this coming season. And he’s already found a new team to call his own.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Aldridge is signing a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets worth $2.6 million. He returns to the team he retired from just five months ago after playing five games for them.

Prior to his retirement, Aldridge was averaging 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He appeared in 26 total games, split between the Nets and San Antonio Spurs.

Aldridge has been medically cleared by a number of doctors – including those both independent and Nets-affiliated – to make a return for his 16th season, Schwartz tells ESPN.

Between 2011 and 2019, LaMarcus Aldridge was voted to the All-Star Game seven times – four with the Portland Trail Blazers and three with the Spurs. He earned five All-NBA selections during that eight-year span.

For his career, Aldridge has averaged 19.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

At 36 years of age, Aldridge may not have many NBA seasons left – even if he is fully healthy. But the Brooklyn Nets need talent and experience at the center position – and Aldridge can conceivably provide it.

Is this a good move for the Nets? Will LaMarcus Aldridge have a bounce-back year this coming season?
