Arizona Cardinals Announce Signing Of Former First-Round WR

September 4, 2021 by The Spun

On Friday, the Arizona Cardinals announced the signing of several players to their practice squad roster.

In addition to the activation of cornerback Robert Alford from the COVID-19 list, the Cardinals signed linebacker Ron’Dell Carter, cornerback Rasul Douglas, CB Antonio Hamilton, defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter, DL Jonathan Ledbetter and offensive lineman Michal Menet.

But, there was one more name on this list that stuck out more than the rest: former first-round pick Josh Doctson.

We have activated CB Robert Alford from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, and signed the following players to the practice squad:

LB Ron’Dell Carter
WR Josh Doctson
CB Rasul Douglas
CB Antonio Hamilton
DL Jeremiah Ledbetter
DL Jonathan Ledbetter
OL Michal Menet

Doctson was selected by Washington with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2016 draft. Coming into the league as a college football superstar from TCU, the talented young wide receiver was expected to make waves at the next level.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to reach that potential so far.

After missing most of his rookie season with an Achilles injury, Docston started to get things going in 2017, logging 502 yards and six touchdowns through 14 starts. The next season, he finished second in team receiving with 532 yards and two touchdowns.

Washington declined to exercise Doctson’s fifth-year option and released him prior to the 2019 season.

Spending most of the season on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury in 2019, Doctson saw time in just one game with the Minnesota Vikings before his was released yet again.

The 28-year-old receiver elected to opt out of the 2020 COVID-19 season.

Now, Doctson will get another shot to reach his potential with the Arizona practice squad.

The Cardinals are pretty set with their wide receivers on the active roster. Superstar DeAndre Hopkins, seven-time Pro Bowler A.J. Green, fourth-year WR Christian Kirk and second-round draft pick Rondale Moore make for a solid receiver unit.
