ASU Baseball: Sun Devils fall in forgettable Tuesday night against Arizona

The trip to Tucson was not a memorable one for Arizona State (16-8). Arizona (19-8) beat the Sun Devils 14-2 in a non-conference contest.

It was all Wildcats, as they scored their 14 runs in five different multi-run innings. Besides the second inning where the Wildcats went down in order, the next lowest number of batters in a given inning was six (first and eighth).

ASU was forced to use eight different pitchers, who threw a combined 68 more pitches than Arizona and walked 10 batters. Both Brady Corrigan and Nick Wallerstedt did not record an out in their respective appearances.

It could have been a lot worse for the Sun Devils, if you can imagine. The Wildcats left 14 runners on, and batted 1-8 (.125) with the bases loaded.

The only two runs for ASU came within the first two innings. After a lead-off single and great baserunning by Joe Lampe, Hunter Jump brought him in with a sacrifice fly to center.

Next inning, freshman Jack Moss went yard for the first time in his ASU career with a solo bomb just over the fence 366-feet deep into left field.

Drew Swift missed the game due to a non-Covid illness. Sean McLain continued his success at the plate. The second baseman was the only Sun Devil hitter with a multi-hit game, extending his hitting streak to 22.

McLain will have an opportunity to tie Andre Ethier’s streak of 23 games on Friday night, when the squad travels to Washington for a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.
