ASU Basketball: Former Sun Devil Rob Edwards drafted by the Thunder in the NBA G League Draft

More ASU ties to the Thunder

Former Sun Devil basketball player Rob Edwards has been selected in the second round by the G League affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Edwards becomes the latest Sun Devil to go from Tempe to Oklahoma City, following in the footsteps of Luguentz Dort, Zylan Cheatham, and in a past life, James Harden. Both Dort and Cheatham played with Edwards at ASU.

Originally from Detroit, Edwards was a standout player at Cass Tech High School, where he averaged 16 points, six rebounds and six assists while leading his team to the District title his junior year.

Edwards began his collegiate career outside of Tempe as a member of the Cleveland State Vikings basketball team. As a freshman, he set the program record for freshman minutes with 994.

After his sophomore year with the Vikings, Edwards transferred to ASU, where he became an immediate impact player for head coach Bobby Hurley.

In his junior and senior years with the Devils, Edwards scored no less than 10 points per game, as well as shooting 36 percent from behind the arc.

Edwards was a great floor spacer for an offense led by Dort, who was more of a slashing, physical guard during his time as a Sun Devil than the genuine three-point threat he has become as a member of the Thunder.

Perhaps Edwards best ability was his skill at getting his shot off the dribble. At times, he would become the de facto ball-handler for the Sun Devil offense when Remy Martin was off the court, and found success getting to his spot both from three-point land and in the midrange game.

Edwards was one of the most consistent players that Hurley has coached in Tempe, but Sun Devil fans will remember him most for his clutch play down the stretch in the Dec. 2018 win over No. 1 Kansas, one of the biggest wins in program history.

If Edwards can work his way up to the Thunder, what a moment it would be for ASU fans and the program to see Edwards and Dort reunited in the NBA.
