ASU Basketball: Illinois State guard DJ Horne latest transfer to join the Sun Devils

Another day, another transfer for Bobby Hurley and the Arizona State men’s basketball program.

Illinois State sophomore guard DJ Horne has announced he will be joining the Sun Devils for the upcoming season.

Last season with the Redbirds, Horne averaged 15.1 points, 2.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. His shooting numbers were very solid as well, with splits of 44.6% from the field, 42.4% from three, and 85.4% from the line.

He is the fourth incoming transfer this offseason for the Sun Devils.

This Horne news arrives nearly 72 hours after Holland Woods announced his decision to transfer away from the program. With shades of Jerry Maguire, Hurley has been frenetically working the phones to secure replacements and depth for his 2021-22 roster, and he has done it again, perhaps faster than he has in his entire career.

Head coaches have been evaluated by three criteria for much of the history of collegiate athletics: their ability to coach, their ability to build a culture, and their ability to recruit.

Now it seems proficiency in the transfer portal has become another way for coaches to separate themselves from their peers. Hurley has established himself as one of the best in the NCAA at securing quality transfers that can contribute immediately.

This upcoming season, it might be easier to count the players who have been with the team for more than three months. There are ten newcomers on this Sun Devil squad. Hope they got name tags at Desert Financial Arena.
