Arizona State has a 2024 QB roster crowded with talent

As it stands now, the 2024 Arizona State quarterback group is crowded with a variety of talent. Barring any changes, the group for the 2024 season may include veterans to the program in 6th-year senior Trenton Bourguet; seniorJacob Conover; a talented yet unproven returning sophomore in Jayden Rashada; Michigan State transfer sophomore in Sam Leavitt; and preferred walk-on freshman from Liberty High School in Arizona, Navi Burzon.

Arizona State will have another competitive year after talent stayed and came for Marcus Arroyo and Kenny Dillingham.

While the Sun Devils continue to add pieces to head coach Kenny Dillingham’s roster, the depth of the quarterback room will remain a strong suit of the second-year head coach. Marcus Arroyo, hired in early December, will have plenty of talent to work with in his first year as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

6th-year senior Trenton Bourguet

Bourguet spent five seasons with ASU football, dating back to the 2019 season as a freshman. In 2020, Bourguet utilized his redshirt year and didn’t receive much playing time in his first three years at ASU.

In his redshirt junior season, Bourguet made seven appearances, five of which came as the starting quarterback after another turbulent season at the position for the Devils.

Bourguet averaged 212.9 yards per game with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. His heroic efforts as a long-time backup option for the program came as somewhat of a surprise to outsiders. His 435 passing yards against Colorado in his starting debut is the second most in program history for a starting debut. He capped off his fourth year with the program by throwing three touchdowns in the Territorial Cup loss to Arizona in Tucson in 2022.

In the 2023 season, Bourguet was again not named the starting quarterback but again played a bigger role than anticipated. He appeared in eight games in which he threw for a total of 1,486 yards and one lone touchdown. In 2023, the ASU offense undoubtedly looked different than years prior.

At the end of the 2023 season, Bourguet announced his return for his final year of eligibility.

Bourguet has played the most overall football out of any quarterback in Tempe, he has also played the most football while in maroon and gold. And while the starting role may go elsewhere from a developmental standpoint of the younger quarterbacks, something is to be said about experience and leadership, two qualities that Bourguet exuded during his years at Arizona State.

Senior Jacob Conover

Conover, like Bourguet, has years under his belt as a college football player. He spent three seasons at BYU after graduating from Chandler High School in Arizona. He served an LSD mission before enrolling at BYU.

In 2023, Conover appeared in three games in which he threw for 130 yards and three interceptions on 38 pass attempts.

Sophomore Jayden Rashada

Out of high school, Rashada was the sixth-ranked quarterback in the nation and the marquee recruit for the 2023 Sun Devil class. Rashada’s 2023 season was dampened by a leg injury that cut his freshman campaign significantly short, and with an abundance of injuries to the rest of the offense, it was difficult to get an accurate scope of his capability throughout the season.

In the 2023 season, he appeared in only three games, meaning he could utilize a redshirt year if he chooses. He threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns in his debut against Southern Utah and showed signs of big-time talent.

His down-the-field capability was shown in the short time he had at Mountain America Stadium. His arm strength and throwing motion are projectable, especially when he adds muscle to his 6-foot-4 frame. Rashada had passes of 47 yards and 65 yards in his first two games, both of which were for touchdowns.

With the emergence of other talented quarterback recruits in the past few weeks, Rashada took to social media to channel his inner Mamba Mentality, a sure sign of Rashada’s competitiveness among the other Sun Devil quarterbacks.

Michigan State transfer sophomore Sam Leavitt

In the same quarterback class as Rashada, Leavitt arrived in East Lansing as the 18th-ranked quarterback in the nation. He appeared in four games for the Spartans where he went 15-23, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on the season. With a new coach for MSU, Leavitt entered the portal, landing in Tempe.

The Oregon native stands 6-foot-2 at 200 pounds, making him a sturdy pass thrower with the ability to use his feet. While his snaps at MSU were limited, Leavitt showed his scramble-and-run ability well in his first year.

Freshman Navi Bruzon

Freshman preferred walk on Bruzon will step onto campus as the 2023 Ed Doherty Award, given to the top Arizona high school football player.

Bruzon led Liberty High School to the Open Division state football championship, played in Mountain America Stadium earlier in December. Bruzon wrapped up his senior year with 3,287 yards, 32 scores and 8 interceptions.

The lefty quarterback will be thrown into the QB room with a wide range of quarterback types and ages for Dillingham come the 2024 season.
