A lot of long balls

Alynah Torres has been on a tear all weekend long. She hadn’t hit a home run entering the GCU Purple Classic, but the shortstop slugger sent two more out in No. 13 Arizona State’s (10-1) 11-3 victory against New Mexico (1-9) to add to her team-lead of five dingers.

Torres first home run pushed her team out to a three-run lead in the first. She added a solo shot in the fifth as well.

The Sun Devil bats then woke up in the fourth inning after a bit of a dry spell. The Lobos tied things up at three on a three-run blast by shortstop Cameryn O’Grady in the second inning.

From there, Arizona State scored eight unanswered runs on its way to the run-rule win. New Mexico had a few miscues in the field that ASU took advantage of. Brittany Holland, Jazmine Hill and Kindra Hackbarth drove in runs.

Three more runs came in during the fifth. Along with the second Torres home run, Halle Harger and Hackbarth added RBIs. Then DeNae Chatman’s solo home run ended the game.

Freshman pitcher Allison Royalty started Sunday’s matchup but was removed following the O’Grady home run. Lindsay Lopez came into the circle and settled in for Trisha Ford’s team. For 4.1 scoreless innings, she only allowed two hits and didn’t face much of a scoring threat.

Arizona State closes out the long weekend on Monday against Utah at 5:00 p.m. MT.
