Atlanta Falcons Have Signed Veteran Running Back

September 3, 2021 by The Spun

A general view of the Falcons stadium.

Just days after being released by the San Francisco 49ers, running back Wayne Gallman has caught on with another NFC team.

Gallman signed with the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Atlanta released running back Qadree Ollison in a corresponding move.

Gallman spent the last four seasons with the New York Giants, who made him their fourth-round pick in 2017. Gallman rushed for 1,444 yards and nine touchdowns with Big Blue, adding 80 receptions for 498 yards and two scores.

Much of Gallman’s production came last year, when he became New York’s primary ballcarrier after injuries to Saquon Barkley and Devonta Freeman. In 15 games (10 starts), Gallman rushed for 682 yards and six touchdowns on 147 carries.

The Giants allowed Gallman to walk in free agency this offseason, and the Clemson product signed with San Francisco. However, he was unable to crack a roster than includes Raheem Mostert, JaMychal Hasty and rookie Trey Sermon, among others.

In Atlanta, Gallman will join a backfield that has Mike Davis as its projected starter, with Cordarrelle Patterson and Keith Smith as the backups.
