Through three seasons in the NFL, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has had four different head coaches. But now for the first time in his young career, the fourth-year QB will have the same coach as the previous year.
With head coach Kevin Stafanski returning for a second season with the Browns in 2021, Mayfield is feeling more confident about the Cleveland playbook.
“The same system gives me more confidence,” Mayfield said, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “The same guys around me also gives more confidence, just because I know how to push those guys now. Definitely going into [mandatory] minicamp [last month], I think all the coaches and the players saw that I was way more comfortable in the system.”
During his 7-8-1 rookie season in 2018, Mayfield had two different coaches: Hue Jackson and Gregg Williams. Freddie Kitchens led the team to an even more disappointing 6-10 season through the young quarterback’s second year in 2019.
Mayfield and the Browns finally found their footing under Stefanski in 2020, notching 11 regular-season wins and earning the franchise’s first postseason berth in more than 18 years. And with this perfect storm coming together in Cleveland, the once-laughable organization now has the opportunity to contend for a title in 2021-22.

With Odell Beckham Jr. rejoining a talented wide receiver corps, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt both returning in the backfield and a newly-bolstered secondary on the defensive end, a steadily improving Mayfield should be able to lead his team to new heights this coming season — especially with a familiar coach by his side.
