Barry Switzer Says 1 School Is Hurt Most By Oklahoma, Texas

Oklahoma and Texas’ move to the SEC has sparked plenty of debate about what this addition means for the conference’s existing 14 teams.

Barry Switzer, who has deep connections with both the SEC and the Big 12, believes this move will benefit the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Switzer served as a player/assistant coach at Arkansas and as a head coach for Oklahoma from 1973-88.

“I’m glad to see this,” Switzer told Clay Henry of Hawgs Illustrated. “I think it helps Arkansas. It can’t hurt.

“First, it expands their recruiting territory. Now there is little doubt in my mind that Oklahoma and Texas are going to continue to get five-star players. But there are lots of good players left and Arkansas has won with those good players before and will again.

“What it does most is hurt Oklahoma State a hell of a lot. And that helps Arkansas.”

Switzer feels the Sooners and Longhorns shifting to the SEC means more highly-touted high school recruits from Oklahoma and Texas will be signing with SEC teams like Arkansas — taking away recruits from Big 12 schools like the OSU Cowboys.

“I believe that,” Switzer added. “I really don’t know what OSU is going to do about it.”

As of yesterday, Oklahoma and Texas have officially notified the SEC that they are seeking “a invitation for membership” starting July 1, 2025.
