As Ben Roethlisberger prepares for what will likely be his final NFL season, he knows that the Steelers will be relying heavily on his right arm.
Last year, Roethlisberger was coming off major elbow surgery, and his arm strength looked noticeably lacking, particularly late in the season. That’s why Pittsburgh fans had to like what they heard from their 39-year-old signal caller after his first training camp practice on Thursday.
“This time last year, I had thrown thousands of footballs trying to get ready for this,” Roethlisberger said, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “This year, this was the first time I’ve thrown a ball since minicamp, other than throwing to my son in the backyard. It just feels more normal of an offseason, if you will.
“My arm feels really, really good.”

Roethlisberger says his arm feels fresher, but the rest of the two-time Super Bowl champion’s body became a major story on Wednesday, when he showed up to camp looking noticeably trim.
Earlier this month, it had been said that Roethlisberger made weight loss a major focus of his offseason.
“Ben camp says biggest concern is weight loss,” broadcaster Ryan Burr reported on July 12. “He has been so driven since [the] season ended. Source says his diet is stricter than [Tom] Brady.”
In 15 games last year, Roethlisberger threw for 3,803 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as the Steelers went 12-4. However, all of their losses came in their final five games as they dropped five of their last six contests in total, including a Wild Card playoff defeat against the Cleveland Browns.
