Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self understands there are positive aspects about the transfer portal. But, all in all, the two-time national champion believes it’s a net-negative.
Speaking to FOX 26’s Mark Berman, Self laid out his thoughts:
“I think it’s bad,” Self explained. “In theory it’s good… freedom of movement. I think sometimes it gives young people a way out without trying to fight through some things. Coaches can move. In theory kids should be able to move – but it’s out of control right now.”

Bill Self also noted that it’s a problem when the reason a student-athlete is moving because “I can get a bigger NIL deal somewhere else.”
“I’m not sure the reason we’re moving is for the right reasons,” the six-time Big-12 Coach of the Year said. “I think they’re for reasons that, sometimes, wouldn’t be best for a youth’s life over time. Because I do think there’s something about staying somewhere and fighting through some stuff.”
These things usually self correct. But, some guard rails can definitely be put in place to help regulate the new space that college athletics finds itself in.
