Brad Stevens Shoots Down Lakers Job: NBA World Reacts

April 14, 2022 by The Spun

It’s been less than a year since Brad Stevens abruptly stepped down as the Boston Celtics head coach to join the team’s front office. But with the Los Angeles Lakers job newly-vacated, could he be willing to return to the coaching ranks?

Appearing on Toucher and Rich, Stevens asserted that he will not be leaving the Celtics to join the Lakers. He stated as much several times while answering the question.

“I definitely would not leave the Celtics to go to the Lakers. Like, I’m definitely not doing that. I know that for a fact,” Stevens said.

Stevens replaced Danny Ainge as Boston’s President of Basketball Operations in 2021. He promptly had the team at the top of the Atlantic Division for the first time in five years.

Boston Celtics fans are praising Stevens for being so loyal to the team. Some also joked that it would be absurd for him to join the Lakers given all of their front office problems:

“This has been the least stressful year of my life. I would love nothing more than to insert myself in the tire fire known as the Los Angeles Lakers. In fact I’d do it for free.” https://t.co/JzdkFEqRKI

The Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job doesn’t seem as appealing now as it might have been years ago. People are catching onto the fact that the coach is held responsible for every struggle the team goes through.

It’s hard to enlist top coaches for such a project under their perpetual “win now” conditions.

The Lakers will no doubt find someone to lead their team into the 2022-23 season – but it won’t be Brad Stevens.

Who will be the next head coach of the Lakers?
