Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin suffered an injury on Sunday night and had to exit his team’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Ovechkin, who scored his 50th goal of the season earlier this month, appeared to suffer an upper-body injury against the Maple Leafs.
The Capitals released an official statement on Sunday night.
“INJURY UPDATE: #Caps captain Alex Ovechkin sustained an upper body injury and will not return to tonight’s game,” the team announced.

Ovechkin appeared to suffer the injury after an awkward collision into the boards. He went to the locker room following this play:

The Washington Capitals, who have already clinched a playoff spot, obviously can’t afford to lose the legendary goal scorer.
Hopefully Ovechkin is being held out of Sunday night’s game for precautionary reasons, rather than a serious injury.
The Capitals should have a clearer idea of Ovechkin’s injury in the days to come.
