The Boston Celtics are reportedly hiring Brooklyn Nets assistant and former NBA forward Ime Udoka as the franchise’s next head coach.
The 43-year-old Udoka was an assistant with the Nets this season after one year on the staff with the Philadelphia 76ers. From 2012-19, he worked under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs.
Udoka, who suited up for five franchises, most notably the Spurs, during a seven-year playing career, has been regarded as a rising star in the NBA coaching world for the past few years. Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported on Monday that Udoka was a top candidate for the position, along with Clippers assistant Chauncy Billups.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who broke news of the hiring, Udoka impressed the Boston brass and had backing from current players.

Udoka is taking over for Brad Stevens, who moved up to the role of team president this summer after eight seasons as head coach.
Stevens, who posted a 354-282 overall record with the Celtics, replaced longtime executive Danny Ainge, who stepped down at the end of the season.
