Breaking: College GameDay Announces Week 2 Destination

September 5, 2021 by The Spun

Iowa State football player directs the Iowa State band. Ames will host College GameDay in Week 2 of the 2021 season.

Back in 2019, Iowa State football hosted ESPN’s College GameDay for the first time, ahead of that year’s Cy-Hawk Game against rival Iowa. Next weekend, they’ll run it back in anticipation of one of the biggest games in the series’ history.

Iowa State entered the season No. 8, with plenty of hype as a College Football Playoff sleeper after an impressive 2020, ending with a Fiesta Bowl win. Matt Campbell returned his stars Brock Purdy and Breece Hall at quarterback and running back. Things got off to a rocky start today, though, as the team limped to a 16-10 win over FCS club Northern Iowa.

Iowa, meanwhile, was very impressive. The team blasted Indiana, one of last year’s surprise teams, 34-6 at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes entered today at No. 18, but after beating the No. 17 Hoosiers in convincing fashion, they should shoot up the rankings a bit.

College GameDay just announced that they’re heading to Ames for next weekend’s Cy-Hawk Game. That rivalry is always heated, and with two very promising teams, the hype should be through the roof.

We’ve had a number of close contests between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones in recent years, but things have been pretty one-sided in the win-loss column. Iowa is riding a five-game winning streak.

Last year’s game wasn’t played due to COVID-19. In 2019, the Hawkeyes won in Ames, 18-17. The year before, Iowa took it 13-3, and in 2017, the game was a 44-41 overtime thriller.

Iowa State’s last win in the series came in Iowa City in 2014. If the Cyclones are going to have the type of season many expect, and shake off the rust of a lackluster Week 1 performance, it could start with a statement win in their biggest rivalry game.
