Breaking: Randy Edsall Steps Down Immediately At UConn

September 7, 2021 by The Spun

The Randy Edsall era at UConn has come to an abrupt end.

Edsall, 63, announced on Sunday he would be retiring at the end of the 2021 season. He’s since had a change of heart. Edsall will be stepping down immediately, per college football insider Brett McMurphy. Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos will serve as UConn’s interim head coach.

“Randy Edsall steps down immediately as UConn’s coach,” McMurphy reported via Twitter. “Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos will serve as interim coach for remainder of season.”

UConn is off to an 0-2 start this season. The Huskies lost 45-0 to Fresno State on Aug. 28 and then 38-28 to Holy Cross last Saturday. The 0-2 start seemed to spark Edsall’s original retirement decision, but he may have since realized there was no point in coaching the rest of what is shaping up to be an ugly season in Connecticut.

Here’s what Randy Edsall had to say about retiring on Sunday when it was announced he’d be doing so at the end of the 2021 season:

“After 17 years of service at the University of Connecticut as its head football coach, I’ve decided to retire at the end of the season,” Edsall said, via UConnHuskies.com.  “Back in 2017 I made a commitment to the University, but felt it was better to make this announcement now rather than the end of the year, to allow the University ample time to prepare for the future of the football program.  All my focus and attention for the rest of the season will be to prepare our players and coaches to go out and win as many games as possible.”

Edsall is the first coach in the FBS to step down this season. We’re sure more will follow in coming weeks.

UConn will try and win its first game of the season this Saturday against Purdue.
