Bret Bielema’s debut as the head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini went as well as he could’ve anticipated, as they took care of business against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this Saturday.
Illinois’ season opener didn’t start off on a great note, especially since starting quarterback Brandon Peters went out in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. However, the Fighting Illini did an excellent job of rattling off 28 unanswered points to take a commanding lead in the second half.
Nebraska made things interesting late in the fourth quarter, but Illinois came up with a game-sealing stop in the closing seconds.
During his postgame press conference, Bielema was asked if he was fighting emotions after the win. His response was quite funny, as he told reporters “No, I was just sweating.”

Even though Bielema dismissed the idea that he was fighting emotions after the win over Nebraska, there’s no doubt this must have been a special win for the Illinois native.
The Fighting Illini still have a lot more work to be done before they can be considered a legitimate contender in the Big Ten. Make no mistake, though, they should not be overlooked as long as Bielema is at the helm.
Next up on the schedule for Illinois is a non-conference matchup with University of Texas at San Antonio. That game will take place on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
