There are a lot of fascinating storylines ahead of the new college football season starting in a few weeks. But one college football insider believes that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s job security could be one of those storylines.
In a recent column on the 2021 season, CBS Sports college football insider Dennis Dodd said that Harbaugh may have less job security with the team even after getting a contract extension this offseason. Dodd explained that the new deal makes it cheaper for the school to fire him, and that failing to challenge for the Big Ten East might compel Michigan AD Warde Manuel to do just that.
“Seldom do coaches get contract extensions and actually lose job security. That might be the case for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan,” Dodd wrote. “After tying for the worst winning percentage of his career (2-4, .333), Harbaugh signed an incentive-laden extension that included a lower base salary. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel didn’t have to say it, but it’s sort of win or else for his football coach, if for no other reason it’s suddenly cheaper to fire Harbaugh. Success starts with beating Ohio State for the first time since 2011 and challenging in the Big Ten East…”
Harbaugh is 49-22 in six seasons as head coach of his alma mater. But just about everyone acknowledges that 2021 is going to be crucial for him after this past season.

Jim Harbaugh’s job security has consistently been a talking point in college football. While the Wolverines only played six games last season, their 2-4 record against Big Ten opponents was their worst since 2009.
While it feels unlikely that Michigan is that bad in 2021. But if they aren’t in New Year’s Six contention by November, things will get dicey for Harbaugh.
Is the Michigan head coach really on the hot seat, or does his new deal ensure his job security?
