The Los Angeles Chargers are 4-1 on the season after Sunday’s dramatic 47-42 comeback win over the Cleveland Browns.
Led by first-year head coach Brandon Staley and second-year star quarterback Justin Herbert, the Bolts are alone in first place in the AFC West. As great as they have been, the reasons for the team’s early success go beyond just those two men, according to general manager Tom Telesco.
In an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, Telesco cited the improved trust between the players and the coaching staff as the biggest reason for LA’s fast start.
“The one thing I’ve really seen is, the trust between the players and the coaches. …that has been the biggest difference this year & it’s leading to wins right now,” Telesco said.

In the first five games as a head coach, Staley has impressed with his aggressiveness and practical application of analytics. Then again, when you have a quarterback playing as well as Herbert is, it is very easy to push the issue on fourth downs and feel confident it will work.
After years of disappointment and heartbreak, this might finally be the year the Chargers break through in the AFC. So far, so good.
