Chargers Insider Has New Update On Running Back Austin Ekeler

September 11, 2021 by The Spun

Los Angeles Chargers back Austin Ekeler rushes against the Rams.

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler has been nursing a hamstring injury this week, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be active for Sunday’s showdown with the Washington Football Team.

Ekeler missed Wednesday’s practice due to a hamstring injury, which led to many fans panicking about his status for Week 1.

The Chargers announced that Ekeler didn’t participate in practice on Thursday either, but he was seen working with trainers off to the side. Then, PFF’s Doug Kyed reported that Los Angeles is optimistic that Ekeler will be ready to go against Washington.

Although it’s still too early to determine Ekeler’s status for Sunday, it sounds like he’s trending in the right direction. On Friday, he participated in practice for the first time this week.

Ekeler still has a few more hurdles to overcome before he’s cleared for Sunday’s game. The fact that his participation level in practice has been upgraded is an encouraging sign, though.

Of course, the Chargers’ chances of defeating the Washington Football Team this weekend will be much greater if Ekeler is active.

Last season, Ekeler had 530 rushing yards and 403 receiving yards for the Chargers. When healthy, he’s a difference-maker for their offense.

If Ekeler can’t suit up for the Chargers’ season opener, the running game will be led by Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley.

We’ll learn more about Ekeler’s status for Week 1 in the very near future.
