Ed Orgeron has made plenty of questionable football decisions over the years, the worst being hiring Bo Pelini as his defensive coordinator last season.
Pelini and LSU mutually agreed to part ways at the conclusion of the 2020 season. The news came after the Tigers gave up over 500 yards in six of LSU’s 10 games. Orgeron had to make a change this offseason.
Coach O discussed his hiring of Pelini during SEC Media Days on Monday. In doing so, he revealed he didn’t interview Pelini “face-to-face” last offseason. But he did add it wouldn’t have made a difference. Orgeron was dead-set on hiring Pelini as his new defensive coordinator.
“It didn’t work, and I’ll never do that again,” Coach O said of the Pelini experiment. “But if I interviewed Bo Pelini face-to-face I still would have hired him.”
Coach O reiterated that he didn’t formally interview former DC Bo Pelini. “It didn’t work, and I’ll never do that again. But if I interviewed Bo Pelini face-to-face I still would have hired him.”#LSU #SECMD21

Bo Pelini became LSU’s new defensive coordinator when Dave Aranda left for Baylor. He signed a four-year contract worth over $9 million. He lasted only a year.
Coach O and the Tigers took six weeks to find a replacement for Pelini. They wound up hiring Daronte Jones. Jones spent the last five years in the NFL as a defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings.
For LSU to, once again, become a contender it will have to take a few steps forward on the defensive side of the ball. Orgeron believes Jones will be key to taking the jump.
