After losing out to rookie quarterback Mac Jones and getting cut by the New England Patriots earlier this week, Cam Newton is out of work yet again. And now a full three days following his release, the former league MVP still doesn’t have a job in the NFL.
Each of Newton’s former coaches have had nothing but good things to say about the talented QB, but when it comes down to it, no team is jumping on the opportunity to pick him up.
Colin Cowherd discussed the market (or lack thereof) for Newton during his show on Friday.
“Everybody tells you they love Cam Newton but each time he’s available, nobody takes him,” he said on The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd. “He had no market as a free agent and now he has no market as a backup.”

Cowherd brought up the fact that other quarterbacks who struggled in 2020 had teams chomping at the bit to pick them up this offseason.
QBs like Mitchell Trubisky, Will Grier and Tyrod Taylor were all scooped up almost immediately after their release. Sam Darnold, who led his former Jets team to a 2-10 record with just nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions this past season, is set to start for Newton’s former Carolina Panthers team in 2021.
Before Newton re-signed with the Patriots earlier this offseason, the former No. 1 overall pick was adamant about his standing heading into free agency.
“There aren’t 32 guys better than me,” he said on Brandon Marshall’s I AM ATHLETE podcast.
While he originally planned to be taking on the 2021 season as a starting QB, Newton is now struggling to find his role as a backup.
Echoing a point made by Cowherd, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said Newton’s superstar personality may be holding teams back from picking him up as a backup option.
“Unless I’m missing something, I really don’t see a landing spot,” Rapaport said on Thursday. “You would also say, do you want Cam Newton, who has been a megastar, someone who is magnetic in the locker room … do you want him as a backup quarterback?
“I am not sure where Cam Newton gets a job, and I am not sure if Cam Newton gets a job.”
