FOX Sports 1 personality Colin Cowherd shared some brutally honest thoughts on USC Trojans head coach Clay Helton on Saturday afternoon.
USC is taking on San Jose State to open the 2021 college football season. The Trojans have been struggling at times, though they’re up, 23-7, in the fourth quarter.
Cowherd took to social media amid the up-and-down performance from USC. It’s clear he’s not a big believer in Helton and his program moving forward.
“Clay Helton is in his 6th year at USC. They are struggling at home against …San Jose State. Offense is a mess. That’s his side of the ball. OLine remains weakest unit — six years running. Rinse and repeat,” he tweeted.

Helton, 49, is entering his sixth full season as the Trojans’ head coach. He became the team’s interim head coach in 2015, going 5-4, before landing the full-time gig ahead of the 2016 season.
USC is 45-23 under Helton. That’s certainly not bad, but it’s far from what the Trojans’ fan base has come to expect in the 21st century.
Perhaps this will be the year that USC finally breaks out and contends for a College Football Playoff berth. The Trojans aren’t giving their fans a lot of reasons for optimism in Week 1, though.
