College Basketball Head Coach Reportedly Ousted Monday

April 25, 2022 by The Spun

Gonzaga taking on Fairleigh Dickinson.

In a rather late move compared to the rest of the college basketball world, one school has decided to part ways with its head coach today.

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Fairleigh Dickinson is set to part ways with head coach Greg Herenda. The Knights went just 4-22 this past year and finished dead last in the Northeast Conference. The news was later confirmed by Stadium.

Herenda was hired by Fairleigh Dickinson in 2013 following a very successful run as head coach at UMass Lowell in Division II. In his third year at the helm, he led the Knights to an 18-15 record and a Northeast Conference title.

Three years later, Herenda led the Knights to a regular season and tournament title. They went on to claim their first-ever NCAA Tournament win, beating Prairie View A&M in the First Four.

Unfortunately, three brutal seasons ensued during which the Knights went just 24-56. The end result is apparently a brand new direction for the New Jersey-based team.

Sources: Fairleigh Dickinson and Greg Herenda have mutually agreed to part ways.

FDU spokesman told @Stadium that the school has parted ways with head coach Greg Herenda.

Herenda went to the NCAA tourney in 2019, but was 24-56 the last three seasons.

Greg Herenda is a New Jersey native who played at Merrimack College before becoming an assistant there in the late-1980s. He returned to his home state in 1994 as an assistant head coach at Seton Hall, followed by two years at Yale and another six at East Carolina.

Herenda got his first head coaching job at Elgin Community College in 2006, then at Cabrini College in 2007 before beginning his successful run at UMass Lowell.

Perhaps Herenda may stay in New Jersey and go back to Seton Hall, where one of his former players – Shaheen Holloway – is now a head coach.

Where do you think Greg Herenda will go next?
