Don’t worry, college football fans. Playoff expansion is still on the horizon. It’s just probably going to take a bit longer than previously anticipated.
Playoff expansion from four to 12 teams is still on track to take place at some point this decade. The new format continues to receive support from various governing bodies. But the lingering question surrounding expansion is when will it be implemented?
Most fans would like to see it occur as soon as next year. But as of right now, 2023 is probably the earliest it could occur. Even that could be a stretch, though. The most plausible year for playoff expansion is 2026. Why? The current four-team contract runs through 2025.
It’s going to be a much longer process to expand to 12 teams than previously anticipated. But expansion is still on track, it’s just a matter of when.
Recently spoke to another CFP Management Committee member who very much cautioned assumptions on an effective date for expansion (earliest could be 2023).
The committee member went as far as to say that 2024 or 2025 may be difficult.

In summary, the good news is the 12-team playoff is widely approved by those in charge. The bad news is we may get a four-team playoff for at least the next five years.

A group put in charge of exploring potential playoff expansion presented its findings to the CFP board of managers on Tuesday.
Following the presentation, the board of managers approved a next step which involves a “summer review phase” that’ll involve more influential members in the process.
“Having heard the presentation made today by the working group, along with the management committee that joined us for today’s meeting, the board has authorized the management committee to begin a summer review phase that will engage other important voices in this matter,” said board chairman Mark Keenum, via 247Sports. “… We have relationships with the bowls and a broadcast partner with whom we will want to consult to explore the feasibility of the 12-team proposal.”
Playoff expansion is on the horizon. Tuesday’s findings were a massive step in the right direction.
