Cubs, A’s Reportedly Agree To Pitcher Trade

July 27, 2021 by The Spun

Oakland A's in the 2019 AL Wild Card Game.

The Chicago Cubs are on the verge of trading relief pitcher Andrew Chafin to the Oakland A’s, according to multiple reports.

The left-handed Chafin is having a breakout season with the Cubs. The 31-year-old reliever has posted a 2.06 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with 37 strikeouts in 39.1 innings over 43 appearances.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first reported a Chafin trade was close, with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal adding that the A’s were the team on the other end.

According to Rosenthal, left-handed hitting outfielder Greg Deichmann is one of the players going back to Chicago in the trade.

The 26-year-old Deichmann is slashing .300/.432/.449 in Triple-A this season with four home runs and 34 RBI.

Chafin may be the first Cub out the door this week, but he almost certainly won’t be the last. Chicago is expected to be active sellers before Friday’s trade deadline.

Shortstop Javy Baez, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, infielder/outfielder Kris Bryant, closer Craig Kimbrel and others all could be on the move.
