Realignment talk has dominated the world of college football for the last week and a half as Oklahoma and Texas are in the midst of finalizing a jump from the Big 12 to the SEC. Since then, the floodgates have opened as rumors about schools switching conferences seem to be popping up everywhere.
Many find the topic of realignment entertaining as hypothetical super-conferences are constantly brought up in discussions. However, plenty of fans find the subject exhausting and obnoxious. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney appears to lean toward that latter category of folks.
When asked about the Oklahoma and Texas news on Tuesday, Swinney recognized the direction that college football looks to be headed down a certain path. Although it doesn’t sound like he’s a fan of that trajectory, the Clemson head coach acknowledged that there’s only so much he can control.
“This is the first domino to fall,” Swinney said, via Marc Whiteman of WYFF News 4. “Ultimately, the more expansion you have, the more you’re going to have super conferences. And probably somewhere down the road … there probably will be some type of 40, 50 or 60-team league that has its own commissioner and a 12, 16-team Playoff. I don’t know.
“That’s probably ultimately where it’s going, but right now [for me], it’s all about trying to get ready for Georgia on Sept. 4. I’ve got my hands full. We’ve got camp starting next week and all of that [realignment] stuff will take care of itself sooner or later. It is what it is and in [a coaches’] role, we don’t really have any input in that. Our job is to get our teams ready and play by whatever rules they give us. And that’s what we’ll do.”

Swinney may appear calm on the surface, but he’s already been adamantly against the consolidation of power in college football. The Clemson head coach has also been a vocal opponent of playoff expansion this offseason.
Swinney has never been afraid to put his opinions out there, even if they contradict public sentiment. If college football does continue to head down a path of massive realignment that he thinks it will, he could very well be among those to speak out against that movement.
