The consensus from the NBA world this week is that the sky is falling for the Philadelphia 76ers. Team president Daryl Morey, however, doesn’t agree with that narrative.
On Tuesday afternoon, Morey had his final press conference for the 2020-21 season. Although he’s frustrated Philadelphia didn’t punch its ticket to the Eastern Conference finals, he believes the franchise has a bright future.
“A lot of what I’m reading I frankly don’t understand,” Morey said, via ESPN. “People [are] saying the Sixers are in a bad situation. I don’t choose to come here, [coach Doc Rivers] doesn’t choose to come here if this is a bad situation. I mean, really 25 or 26 teams in this league would love to be in our situation with an MVP-caliber top player and All-Star, near All-Star, great young players who are signed for the long term, good veterans.”
The 76ers have a solid foundation with Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris, but the team might not reach its ceiling if Ben Simmons continues to struggle as a scorer.

Morey didn’t really face many questions about Simmons’ future, but he did make an interesting comment about the roster.
“None of us can predict the future of what’s going to happen in any, in any place. We love what Ben brings, we love what Joel [Embiid] brings, we love what Tobias [Harris] brings. In terms of what’s next, we’re going to do what’s best for the 76ers to give us the best chance to win the championship with every single player on the roster.”
The pressure will be on Morey to make at least a few tweaks to the 76ers’ roster this offseason. If he chooses to move on from Simmons, it’d be the biggest move he’s made since joining the franchise in 2020.
