The MLB trade deadline isn’t until tomorrow afternoon, and we’ve already had some massive deals, none bigger than the Dodgers-Nationals blockbuster.
This afternoon, it looked like Nationals ace Max Scherzer was headed West and joining the San Diego Padres. However, before that trade could be solidified, the Dodgers swooped in and landed not only the three-time Cy Young winner, but Washington shortstop Trea Turner as well.
The final details on this transaction are out there, and both teams made out well. Los Angeles gets a proven, bulldog starting pitcher to add to its rotation as well as a multidimensional sparkplug to slot into an already loaded lineup.
As for the Nats, they can begin their rebuild with the Dodgers’ two top prospects–catcher Keibert Ruiz and righthanded pitcher Josiah Gray. Both are among the top 60 prospects in the entire sport, with Ruiz ranking in the top 20.
Two other minor leaguers–righthanded pitcher Gerardo Carrillo and outfielder Donovan Casey–are also on their way to Washington.
The deal, source confirms, is Max Scherzer and Trea Turner for four players: C Keibert Ruiz and RHP Josiah Gray (the Dodgers’ top two prospects), plus RHP Gerardo Carrillo and OF Donovan Casey. It’s not all the way finished yet, but Scherzer has given his consent.
