The Miami Dolphins are already stretched a little bit thin at tight end in training camp. But they could be getting even thinner after a rookie was carted off.
According to Miami Herald reporter Armando Salguero, Dolphins rookie tight end Hunter Long was carted off the field today. Per the report, he was dealing with “obvious discomfort” in his right leg.
Long was a third-round pick for the Dolphins in the 2021 NFL Draft. He earned First-Team All-ACC honors in 2020 as a senior at Boston College.
The Dolphins are already without starting tight end Mike Gesicki, who is on the reserve list with COVID-19. Tight ends Cethan Carter and Adam Shaheen recently joined him on that list. Outside of those three, the Dolphins don’t have a lot of great options at the position right now.

The Miami Dolphins went 10-6 last year, their first winning season since 2016. But despite having a superb defense, their offense became anemic in the tail end of the season and they narrowly missed the playoffs.
They spent the ensuing offseason addressing that offense and are expected to make the playoff leap this year. But those plans could be damaged if their tight ends don’t take a leap too.
What the Dolphins do have right now though is a superb corps of wide receivers. DeVante Parker, rookie Jaylen Waddle, Allen Hurns and Will Fuller all have the requisite skill and experience to make second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s upcoming season season.
We can only hope Hunter Long’s injury isn’t serious.
